LEES GENERAL STORE

The family arrived in Fremantle in 1910 and travelled to Broomehill in 1912.
In 1913 they moved to Gnowangerup.
Their first store was operational in 1913 and opened by Fred Lee Senior and taken over by Fred Lee Junior on 1 January 1917. Their son ‘Freddie’ was born 1917 in Gnowangerup.
This shop was where Economic Stores were, next to the Memorial Hall
On 21 February 1925 the original shop burnt down.

Following the fire which burned the store down in 1925, Fred Lee Junior and his family left Gnowangerup and went back to Ireland for a few months.
Mr. Fred Lee Senior returned to his home town of Sheffield in 1925. Then the family all returned to open a new shop in Gnowangerup in 1926.
Their son (born in 1925) was also named Fred Lee.
Mark Lee: "My father was Fred Lee (3).
John Edgar Lee was born in 1925 in Gnowangerup, and was named after a John Edgar Rowe, an early shopkeeper in Gnowangerup.
The photo of the house on your site has Whitehead Road on it .. But they would have had several in their time there.
Mark Lee:”Mrs Annie Fennell was living in one of them (his cousin) when my father visited the town during your 75th celebrations”.
